Google's web browser wins over most of the world in April

Google Chrome has maintained its top position among the world’s browsers, even though its market share has dropped marginally.

According to data coming from StatCounter, Chrome has a market share of 45.22 percent, up from the 43.67 percent from March. At the same time, Internet Explorer has managed to lose quite a lot of fans, as only 21.43 percent of the world’s Internet users picked it as their favorite browser, down from the 22.55% from March.

The drop in Internet Explorer users can certainly be explained through the fact that Microsoft has cut off support for Windows XP and several early Internet Explorer versions. People who still wanted to use Windows XP had to protect themselves by switching over to a new browser, as some have one with Chrome, or to newer Internet Explorer versions.

Judging by recent reports, however, Internet Explorer is not exactly safe either, as some versions can be exploited in such a manner that users lose control over their computers.

Firefox has lost a few users as well, going down from 18.76 percent in March to 18.62 percent last month, although the drop is quite small. Apple’s Safari had a 9.79 percent market share in April, down from 9.92% the previous month.

When it comes to web browser versions, Chrome 34 and 33 are the top two most used, while Firefox 28 follows behind. Internet Explorer 11 and 8 take over the next two spots.

As we’ve already become accustomed to so far, Chrome is the most used browser in most areas of the globe, with very few exception. Even so, Chrome won over the United States, Canada, the entire South America, most of Europe, Asia, northern Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

Firefox got the attention of most countries in Africa, Germany, Poland, Syria, Iran, and a few nations over in Asia, including Indonesia. Internet Explorer continues to be the top choice of just a few nations – Greenland, Char, Zambia, South Africa, Japan and Papua New Guinea.

Unfortunately, these numbers must be taken with a grain of salt, since another service, Net Application, gives completely different stats. For instance, Internet Explorer is said to have a 57.88 percent market share, while Chrome comes in as a far second with 17.92 percent. Firefox is close behind with 17 percent share, while Safari is the favorite browser of 5.66 percent of Internet users.

The truth is perhaps somewhere in between.
