14 DAY TRIAL // Google Chrome continues to lead the list of most popular browsers in the world, but its market share has dropped slightly as Safari won a few people over.
According to data coming from StatCounter, Chrome had a worldwide market share of 43.67 percent in January 2014, down from the 43.92 it had in December. The slip is quite small, but it’s not something we’ve seen in a while.
The second spot is taken by Internet Explorer, which has a 22.85 percent share, down from December’s 23.24 percent.
Firefox comes in on the third spot, with a market share of 18.9 percent, a very similar number of December’s results.
Apple’s Safari now has a market share of 9.73 percent, up from the 9.4 percent it had in December. The browser has been climbing steadily in popularity over the past several months. Opera pretty much maintained its market share over the past month, as 1.3 percent of Internet users chose it over other solutions.
When it comes to browser versions, Chromes 32 and 31 take the top two spots with market shares of 18.84 percent and 18.66 percent, respectively. Firefox 26 follows behind with 14.57 percent share. Internet Explorer 11 and 8 take the next two positions (7.5 percent and 6.61 percent), wrapping up the top five browser versions.
Data also indicates that most nations in the world prefer Chrome, including the United States, Canada, nations in South America, most of Europe, Russia, India, Australia and countries in the Northern regions of Africa.
Users in many central African countries are big fans of Firefox, as are those in Germany, Poland, Austria, Iran and Afghanistan, as well as Indonesia.
As always, not all stat counters give out the same results. For instance, Net Applications has Microsoft’s Internet Explorer at the top of the chart, with a staggering 58.21 percent, while Firefox stands at 18.08 percent and Chrome at 16.28 percent.
