It's uncertain what triggered the warning message

Yesterday, on May 10, Google Chrome users who wanted to access PhysOrg (phys.org), the popular science, research and tech news service, were met with a warning that informed them on the presence of malware.

“phys.org contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site. Google has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you’ve visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it’s possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed,” read the message that greeted visitors.

As ZDNet highlights, the alert may have been triggered by a number of things, including a false positive detection, or a rogue ad that served malware. Another possibility is that the site had been compromised and altered by the attackers.

Currently, Google Chrome no longer displays the warning message, but it’s still unknown what caused the incident.
