Google has announced the release of a new update to Google Chrome in the Beta channel. Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 Beta has been pushed for Linux users ahead of the Windows and Mac builds in order to address an SSL issue. The biggest, new feature in Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 Beta, apart from the usual array of bug fixes, is the automatic translation tool, which landed on Windows a couple of weeks ago.

"Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 has been released to the Beta channel for Linux. We’ll be releasing 342 to Mac and Windows soon, but we wanted to get the Linux update out as quickly as possible to fix an issue with Google SSL sites failing with ‘error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR)’," Mark Larson, from the Google Chrome team, said in the official announcement.

Highlights of Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 Beta:

· Automatic translations for sites in languages different than the current locale; · Extensive privacy options and features; · 'Real' reload, hitting Shift+Reload forces the page to reload completely and bypass the cache.

The big, new feature in the Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 Beta is the automatic translation. When Chrome detects a web page written in a language different from the one set in Chrome's options, the browser offers to translate the page. The tool makes use of Google's extensive machine translation technologies used in Google Translate and other tools.

It works pretty well in practice, though it can become annoying at one point. Thankfully, you can disable it for certain sites or languages. You can't disable it altogether, though. The feature has been available on the Dev channel for a while.

Another important feature in Google Chrome 5.0.342.7 Beta is the new Privacy Options menu. It features an extensive list of settings allowing users to set the way their browsers handle cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins, and pop-ups. These can be customized on a site-by-site basis.
