Google is moving forward with its own breed of open-source browser based on the WebKit rendering engine. In this regard, users will now be able to download Google Chrome 3.0.189.0. The Build was released to the developer channel on June 17th. In addition to the version designed to integrate with the Windows platform, Chrome is also available for download for Mac OS X, and Linux. According to the Mountain View-based search giant, Chrome 3.0.189.0 brings to the table a new version of the JavaScrip engine, V8, now 1.2.8.

Other “highlights for this release: lots of crash fixes and code stabilization. All extensions now require signing, all unsigned extensions have been disallowed. Extensions are, at least for the moment, disabled in incognito mode. Fixed a session history bug which prevented proper backward and forward operation for certain sites,” revealed a member of the Chrome team.

Version 3.0.189.0 is the successor of 3.0.187.1 released on June 11, 2009. In fact, at that time, Google made available for download no less than two releases of the browser at just a day distance from one another. 3.0.187.1 succeeded 3.0.187.0, because, only after release, the company came across a functionality issue for the Windows flavor of Chrome. Version 3.0.187.0 managed to crash whenever the end users would click on an item in the menu. 3.0.187.1 resolved the bug. The Mac OS X and Linux variants of Chrome had not been affected by the problem in the least.

“We apologize for the problem and we are making changes to our process to try and avoid issues like this in the future. The dev channel is always going to be a little risky but we agree that major features like this should not go out broken,” promised Jonathan Conradt, engineering program manager.
