Just as Google Chrome 10 graduates to the beta channel, Chrome 11 comes from behind to replace it in the developer channel. This is the first official Chrome 11 release, though it has been available as a Canary build for a few weeks now and, of course, as the open-source Chromium. Since it's still in the early stages, there aren't that many differences or new features compared to the recently released Chrome 10 beta.

As Chrome 11 gets better fleshed out, it should become clearer which features are ready and which will be pushed to further releases.

The current Chrome 11.0.672.2 build comes with several fixes as well as an updated V8 JavaScript engine. A notable new feature is the new XSS Auditor which is now enabled by default.

The Google Chrome Releases lists the main updates in the first Chrome 11 dev channel build:

· Updated V8 to 3.1.4.0; · Fixed the crash when loading tabbed options in some cases; · Fixed a crash triggered when canceling a download; · Fixed a crash triggered by form resubmissions; · FTP: fixed a compatibility issue; · XSS Auditor re-designed and enabled by default. It’s still experimental (and there are known bypasses), but we’re looking for feedback about false positives.

A hint of things to expect in Chrome 11 is available in the 'flags' section, there are plenty of technologies in testing in the latest release. Notably, full hardware acceleration seems to be an issue for Google and things like accelerated compositing and even the accelerated canvas are still hidden behind flags, at least on some platforms.

Hopefully, Chrome 11 will be able to boast greater support for hardware acceleration, by the time it reaches the stable channel, both Firefox 4.0 and Internet Explorer 9 should be out.
