Google is a data driven company, there's no argument about that. It's got some of the smartest people working for it, so it's probably no big surprise that it sometimes stresses over the most minute detail, to get things perfect.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the design department, Google is known for make extensive studies for the slightest color or layout change.
And it's applying the same principles to the ads it runs, for example, it conducted a thorough study to determine what is the best color to use in an ad to highlight a link when a visitor hovers over it.
It
determined that color does actually have an effect on clickthrough rate and that the best results were achieved when the link color changed to a complimentary one, for example from red to green, or from blue to red.
So Google is now automatically using a complimentary color for anything you choose for your ad units, to maximize performance.
