Google takes today's holiday to a new level

Halloween is upon us and Google is taking advantage of this by rolling out not one, not two, but six doodles that will grace your screen. You can simply wait for the next time you open Google to see one, or just abuse the refresh button to get them all.

Google enlisted the help of three artists to help put together these new animated doodles. Markus Magnusson, a freelance motion-designer from Sweden, Olivia Huynh, animator and filmmaker from Baltimore and Taylor Price, an illustrator and filmmaker from Los Angeles, are the three who took care of this year’s doodles.

Magnusson’s doodles touch two important Halloween topics – zombies and werewolves. The zombie one is quite amusing and puts the Google name on tombstones riddled by the living dead. The second one, representing the werewolf, makes the first “O” in the Google name take on a different personality at night, when the full moon rises, making all other letters scramble in fear.

Olivia Huynh took up another two Halloween topics – witches and ghosts. In the first one, we can see a witch stirring in a cauldron, dropping in potions and causing bats and ghosts to fly out, as well as a hand.

In the second, in a series of beautifully done white arches, we can see a girl being chased by a ghost, only to see her furry best friend jump to the rescue and chase away Casper’s mean brother.

Halloween – the fall holiday

Taylor Price approached the topic from a different perspective, focusing on the fall fields, scarecrows and the jack-o-lanterns that are so popular this time of year.

In the first doodle, we can see Google’s name painted in fall colors, with the L being replaced by a smiling scarecrow on a pole. Two crows sit on top of the letters, while the scarecrow waves a hello and a small mouse pokes its head out of the straw hat.

Lastly, the pumpkin doodle shows a starry night, with vines intertwined among the Google letters and the two jack-o-lanterns taking over the two “O” in the name. The pumpkins are dancing, which makes them fun to watch.

The doodles reach a good part of the world, including most of North and South America, a good part of Europe, Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Only a few countries in Africa get to enjoy the Halloween doodles.
