Along with adopting the new Google design, Google Calendar has updated the set of colors available to label different events and calendars. That may not seem like much of a new feature, but the visual cues are very important in a calendar app.
UI ergonomics are probably more important in a calendar app than in others since users want to get an overview of their day or week at a glance. Colors help with that.
Of course, the new colors also integrate better with the new design, creating a more pleasant and coherent palette of colors across the entire site.
"The color of each of your calendars has been updated to use the closest possible color from the new palette," Google
explains.
"The new colors will only be available in the web interface (for example, you won't see these colors if you're accessing Calendar via your mobile phone)," it said.
