It comprises no less than 520 names covering various areas and fields, the nucleus being domain names that belonged to companies spawned or acquired by Google, and therefore are not in the online giant's name but in that of the original companies.
Other than the domain names that Google bought as a package with its acquisitions, the Mountain View Company has also made sure that it owned misspellings of its actual site names. Misspellings are a common tactic used to attract online traffic by simulating the name of an intensely trafficked brand or site. To this Google has added defensive pre-emption, a strategy meant to keep it safe from domain names that had the potential to harm its image.
