Google+ gets another feature to differentiate itself, if only slightly

Google has made a 'daring' move and has debuted a new Google+ feature which enables users to add text captions to photos. Google wants Google+ to become an instant-meme machine, it seems.

Of course, memes are only fun when they're fresh, it seems unlikely that Google+ will be the place where the funny new ones will surface, but it's an interesting addition nonetheless.

Depending on how funny your friends are, your stream is about to get a lot more fun or a lot more annoying.

"Adding a few words can turn a silly photo into a ROFL, or draw attention to what you find most interesting. Today we're rolling out a feature that makes it easier to add big, bold text on top of your photos," Google's Colin McMillen announced.

"To try it out, drop a photo into the sharebox on Google+, then click the 'Add text' button underneath the photo. Type in something funny, then share and enjoy," he explained.

The feature will be rolling out over the next few days, so you may not see the link yet. Again, this may be a good thing, a few more days before the deluge begins.

Once you do have it enabled, you'll see the new "Add text" link beneath any photo you choose to share on Google+. You'll see an editor which enables you to write the text and position it on the photo, then you'll be able to publish the modified photo.

While the feature was created with memes in mind, it's probably going to get more use as a simple way of adding a funny capture to a photo you want to share with friends, but it's still a fun addition and another way for Google+ to differentiate itself, if only slightly.
