Picture a beach with soft sand and blue sky, the sun rising in the distance and you hanging around your house there, having a refreshing drink while just chilling in the shade of a big tree. Ok, I don't know how a tree would catch roots on a beach or how the sun would just be rising
with you needing a drink so early, or at the very least, why you would be there instead of being at work (ok, that I understand, but I'm just jealous of the Aussies for being able to do that).
If you envisioned that, you might have had a shot at winning the Doodle 4 Google Australia competition… if you were 12, that is. That's the drawing that Janelle San Juan, a student at the "School of the Good Shepherd" in Victoria, entered the competition with and chances smiled at her and the doodle, entitled "A scene of sheer formality".
The judging panel said that the decision had been a difficult one (as they always are, there's never an easy decision to be made). Dennis Hwang, the original Google Doodler said that: "Choosing the successful entry was not easy. I was blown away by the creativity of all the doodles and wide array of Australian imagery which was used." About Janelle's drawing, Dennis said that: "Her design was both unique and at the same time instantly recognizable as being Australian. The depiction of the sun, the kangaroo sign in the outback, the bathing box at the beach and the people relaxing in the shade of the tree make this the perfect doodle for Australia Day"
The prize was 10,000 bucks worth of technology equipment for her school and a MacBook Pro, as well as the featuring of her drawing on the Google Australia homepage, for Australia Day in 2008.
