Goodbye openSUSE 11.2

Announced by the openSUSE project about seventeen months ago, the openSUSE 11.2 operating system will reach end of life (EOL) on May 12th, 2011.

openSUSE 11.2 introduced features such as Linux kernel 2.6.31.5, EXT4 as the default filesystem, the GNOME 2.28.0 and KDE 4.3.1 desktop environments, X.Org 7.4, X.Org server 1.6.5, new artwork, the Slab Main Menu for GNOME, OpenOffice.org 3.1, USB installation support, WebYaST, and much more.

With regrets, the openSUSE developers, through Marcus Meissner, announced on March 24th that there will be no more updates coming for the openSUSE 11.2 Linux distribution, starting with May 12th, 2011.

Support for openSUSE 11.2 will be officially droped, which means that starting with May 12th, 2011, the openSUSE project will stop "feeding" the openSUSE 11.2 operating system with security or critical fixes, and software updates.

"SUSE Security announces that the SUSE Security Team will stop releasing updates for openSUSE 11.2 soon. Having provided security-relevant fixes for the last two releases and two months, we will stop releasing updates after May 12th 2011."

"The discontinuation of openSUSE 11.2 enables us to focus on the openSUSE distributions of a newer release dates to ensure that our users can continuously take advantage of the quality that they are used to with openSUSE products."- said Marcus Meissner openSUSE’s security team leader in the official announcement.

It is possible that the openSUSE 11.2 operating system will remain alive through the popular Evergreen community project. However, the openSUSE development team will continue to provide frequent software updates and security patches for the openSUSE 11.3 and openSUSE 11.4 operating systems, until January 15th and September 15th, 2012, respectively.

Existing openSUSE 11.2 users have now the opportunity of upgrading to the brand-new openSUSE 11.4 release. The latest version, openSUSE 11.4 can be grabbed right now from Softpedia.
