Seventeen months ago, on the 30th of October, 2008, Canonical announced the release of Ubuntu 8.10, dubbed Intrepid Ibex. Features such as Linux kernel 2.6.27, Guest sessions, DKMS, X.Org 7.4, the BBC plugin for Totem, and the PAM authentication framework were all part of the Ubuntu 8.10 operating system. The default desktop environment for Ubuntu (GNOME) reached then a very important milestone: 2.24, bringing a huge list of changes.

Dear Ubuntu 8.10 users, the time has come to say goodbye to the Intrepid Ibex release of the popular Ubuntu operating system. One month from today, on April 30th, it reaches end of life. This means that, starting with April 30th, 2010, Canonical will stop "feeding" its Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) operating system with security/critical fixes and software updates! Therefore, we strongly recommend upgrading your Ubuntu 8.10 system to a newer version (see the quote below for details and upgrade information). Or you could wait one more month for the brand-new and amazing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), which will be supported for 3 years on desktop and 5 years on server.

"The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 8.10 is via Ubuntu 9.04. Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades. Note that upgrades to version 9.10 and beyond are only supported in multiple steps, via an upgrade first to 9.04, then to 9.10." - Steve Langasek said in the official announcement.

What is Ubuntu? Ubuntu is an open-source piece of software, 100% FREE to download and use. Users are free to customize or alter the included software in order to meet their needs. Since its launch in October 2004, Ubuntu has become one of the most highly regarded Linux distributions with millions of users in homes, businesses, schools and governments around the globe. The current release is Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and the next one, expected at the end of April, will be Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx).
