Dear Ubuntu users, the time has come to say goodbye to the Server Edition of the first LTS (Long Term Support) release of the popular Ubuntu operating system, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake), as on June 1st it will reach end of life.

Announced five years ago, on Wednesday, June 1st, 2006, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) was the first long-term-support version of the Ubuntu operating system and it was powered by Linux kernel 2.6.15 and GNOME 2.14.

Starting with June 1st, Canonical will stop "feeding" its Ubuntu 6.06 LTS operating system with security/critical fixes and software updates! Those of you who still use Dapper Drake and want to upgrade will have to choose another supported LTS release, Ubuntu 8.04.3 (Hardy Heron), which is supported for two more years.

Dapper Drake was an important release, because at that point in time Kubuntu became part of the Ubuntu family. Long Term Support editions are released every two years and are supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server.

Ubuntu 6.06 was the first LTS release, followed by Ubuntu 8.04 on April 2008 and the Ubuntu 10.04 on April 2010. The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server is via Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server.  Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades.

On April 28th, Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) will become the 14th release of the Ubuntu operating system. Don't forget to visit our website next Thursday, April 28th, for an in-depth article on the Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) release, where we will unveil its new features!
