Following the end-of-life announcement for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), Clement Lefebvre just announced a few minutes ago that Linux Mint 4.0 (Daryna) would no longer receive software updates and security/critical fixes, starting April 18th, 2009. Therefore, all Linux Mint 4.0 users are urged to migrate to the Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa) with Long Term Support or the brand new Linux Mint 6 (Felicia)!

Linux Mint 4.0, codename Daryna, was based on and compatible with the Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) operating system and its repositories. Linux Mint 4.0 brought many new Linux technologies and applications, such as: Linux kernel 2.6.22, GNOME 2.20.0, OpenOffice.org 2.3.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0. Daryna was also the first Mint release that introduced the popular mintUpdate (Mint's software update manager) and mintInstall (Mint's software installer) tools. Moreover, just like Ubuntu 7.10, Linux Mint 4.0 (Daryna) was the first version of the Linux Mint operating system to include the amazing Compiz Fusion 3D desktop effects, which were enabled by default.

We know that it was a great release, but if you're still using the Linux Mint 4.0 operating system, we strongly suggest to upgrade to Felicia a.k.a. Linux Mint 6, which includes Linux kernel 2.6.27, GNOME 2.24, X.Org 7.4, mintInstall 5, mintUpdate 3, mintUpload 2, mintNanny and the brand new mint4win tool that allows you to install Linux Mint from the Microsoft Windows operating system!

What is Linux Mint? Linux Mint is an elegant, up-to-date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution based on the very popular Ubuntu operating system. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. If you want to give Linux Mint 6 (Felicia) a try, download it right now from Softpedia.
