Last May, 25-year-old Tom Neuwirth became the winner of Eurovision 2014, as Conchita Wurst, aka the Bearded Lady. Conchita is now a fashion icon and has already worked with prestigious designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld on one, highly mediated campaign.

She couldn’t possibly miss out on the biggest fashion event of the new year, the red carpet at the Golden Globes 2015, which took place last night in Beverly Hills, celebrating accomplishments in television and film for the previous year.

Conchita Wurst has received a lot of hate for being who she is, but she’s not letting that stop her. She walked the red carpet at the gala last night in a gorgeous green dress with a bodice detail that matched her shoes.

She styled her hair in the usual fashion, went heavy on the eye makeup and, of course, rocked her trademark beard.

There’s no ID yet on the designer of the gown or her jewelry, but that must be of little importance to her: a few days before the gala, she said she was eager to be included on E!’s Fashion Police, preferably in the Best Dressed category.

We might not know who she wore, but the gown was gorgeous enough to secure her a spot on that list.

Making a statement

Conchita’s appearance at the Globes wasn’t all about the fashion, though. Right before arriving on the scene, she posted a message to her Twitter urging her followers to “always try to see behind the curtain” and tagging it with #JeSuisCharlie and #TheUnstoppables.

Conchita used her appearance and the media attention it generated to get the conversation started on diversity in the industry and particularly the need for equality.

“The Golden Globes are an event that brings the glamour of Hollywood into living rooms across the planet. But let’s not forget that events like this are also a strong showcase of the diversity and seriousness in entertainment as an art form,” she said in another message.

“Recent events in Europe have shown that freedom of speech is under attack. Let’s unite and keep on with our unstoppable fight for peace and freedom – and freedom of expression,” Conchita wrote.

It’s true, Conchita’s fight for freedom of expression means showing up at an A-list event and hoping to be noticed for her elegant fashion, but it’s small battles like this one that help win the war.
