Grab your popcorn and sit back to enjoy the ride, because we’re about to have a first proper look at the potential candidates for the Oscars in February. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just announced the nominees in film for the Golden Globes 2014, with the full list included, as always, below, at the end of the article.

If you’re wondering what the connection between the Golden Globes and the Oscars is, the answer is that, for years, the former have been considered the best indicator for the latter. Other awards allow moviegoers and fans in general to get an idea of critics’ favorites movies, but only the Globes are considered a clue into what the Oscar nominations might be.

With this in mind, let’s just say that this year’s race in the awards season will be a very tight one, with Steve McQueen’s slavery drama “12 Years a Slave” and Dave O. Russell’s crime caper “American Hustle” landing 7 nominations each.

Both got a nod in the biggest categories of the gala, Best Picture Drama and Comedy or Musical, respectively, with “12 Years a Slave” also earning Chiwetel Ejiofor a nomination in Best Actor Drama, while “American Hustle” landed Christian Bale one in Best Actor Comedy or Musical.

“Captain Phillips,” “Gravity,” “Her,” “Dallas Buyers Club” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” also got nominated. It’s interesting to note that “The Wolf of Wall Street” from director Martin Scorsese is already reaping award nominations even though it hasn’t been widely released in theaters yet. The same happened in 2012 with Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” which was released in time for the awards season but hit theaters on Christmas Day.

The nominees for this year were announced in a live ceremony from Beverly Hills, California, by Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, and Aziz Ansari.

The Golden Globes 2014 will be hosted again by the incredibly funny duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and will take place on January 12, 2014. Until then, check out the nominees for the main categories in film below.
