It's not uncommon for celebrities to use the few minutes they have to make an acceptance speech at various events to highlight other causes close to their heart. Peter Dinklage did just that at last night's Golden Globes 2012.

The actor, fresh off an Emmy win for his work on the HBO fan and critic-favorite “Game of Thrones,” was honored again at the year gala held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA.

In taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, Dinklage beat out major competitors, some of which not even his own mother thought he could top.

The other nominees were Paul Giamatti (“Too Big to Fail”), Guy Pearce (“Mildred Pierce”), Tim Robbins (“Cinema Verite”) and Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”).

Dinklage even mentioned in his acceptance speech that his mom though Pearce would win, adding that she'd encouraged him to “go and have fun.”

His acceptance speech is below, embedded at the end of the article.

The actor also thanked his adorable wife and recently born daughter and, of course, the team behind the HBO hit series.

It wasn't until the end of the speech that he mentioned the name that would almost instantly shoot to the top trending position on Twitter and other social networking sites.

“I want to mention a gentleman I'm thinking about in England. His name is Martin Henderson – Google him,” he said.

Henderson is a fellow dwarf actor, who is now facing life in a wheelchair after he was attacked by a drunken stranger because of his height.

The attack occurred in October last year but recent reports indicate Henderson's condition has been deteriorating for the past weeks, which would explain why Dinklage mentioned him in his speech.

Of course, he also wanted to draw attention to these vile and unprovoked attacks, which are almost always caused by discrimination and unfounded hatred towards short people.
