Golden Globes 2011: Robert Downey Jr.’s Hilarious, Inappropriate Speech

Last night at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, all jokes turned towards the inappropriate, with host Ricky Gervais setting the tone. Robert Downey Jr.’s speech as presenter was one of the strongest moments of the night.

While Gervais came under serious fire for some of the jokes he included in his speeches, Downey’s was received with hysterical laughter, mainly because it proves, once more, that he never takes himself too seriously.

Gervais introduced Downey, enumerating some of his best-known movies and joking that it could very well be that he was best known for his stints in rehab, PopEater informs.

“But many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail,” Gervais said.

Never the one to take offense that easily, Robert did not miss the chance to fire back at the British comedian, saying the awards ceremony was going wonderfully, except for the times when Gervais was actually on stage.

“Aside from the fact that it’s been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I’d say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn’t you?” Downey asked.

Then, when handing the award to the winner in the Best Actress in Comedy or Musical category, the star did not miss the opportunity to present his theory (and study) about how female actresses do their best job after they have slept with him.

“I consider myself a veteran of sorts. And I’ve made somewhat a study of this,” the actor began by saying. He then proceeded to present his unique – and well documented, he argued – theory.

“I don’t know if an actress can do her best work, until I’ve slept with her, Julianne,” he said, meaning Julianne Moore, nominated for “The Kids Are All Right.”

“Told her that I was working with strange new feelings that were confusing me, Angie [Angelina Jolie], only to have her blow me off half way through the shoot like it never happened, Annette [Bening],” he added.

He then agreed that the nominees this year might be the exception that broke the rule, since they all put on great performances without bedding him.

“If I could, I’d give it to all five of you. At once,” Downey added, meaning the award. Still, his smile suggested “it” could also mean something else.

Check out Robert Downey Jr.’s hilarious speech at the 2011 Golden Globes below. Enjoy.

It is indeed inappropriate but not hilarious. It was quite embarassing and stupid. Alot of people made a habbit of making this kind of "jokes".

Totally agree with the writer. It seems that every other paper and publication wants to make RDJ seem like the angry party. It seemed clear to me that he was playing at being snippy, and went on to voluntarily poke even more fun at himself.

RDJ was my favorite part of the night! And thank you for pointing out the fact that he was making jokes about it and not taking it seriously although most tabloids made it sound like he was.

What can I say, I love the guy - and if there's anyone who can take a joke, that's RDJ. No drama. His stint was my favorite moment of the night as well.

Thanks :)

Elena.

Honnestly, it was funny, not so inappropriate, not as inappropriate as Gervais' speech ! Be true, that was hilarious, I was laughing so much when heard this ! This is a kind of weird sense of humor, this is heavy, but this is RDJ, don't have to make an affair of it !
