Golden Globes 2011: Natalie Portman’s Dress Is Most Talked About

Ever since Natalie Portman announced she was pregnant with her first child – with fiancé ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied – all eyes have been on her, especially with awards season in full bloom. At the 2011 Golden Globes, she did not disappoint.

Like it or hate it, Portman’s dress at the awards ceremony was the most buzzed of the evening. It was a rose colored / pale pink Viktor and Rolf, accented with a giant red rose on her chest.

The actress, who took home the award for Best Actress for her role in “Black Swan,” matched the dress – or rather the red rose – with Stella McCartney red shoes, jewelry from Tiffany & Co. and a red Dior clutch.

PopEater says the dress was just the perfect choice for Portman, since it both allowed her to show off her growing baby bump, and also made a statement of how she’s always one step ahead of the rest of the class in terms of style.

However, there was one thing about it that turned it into quite a topic for debate in the blogosphere and twitterverse: that oversized red rose.

Granted, the cut and the draping at the front were perfect for her figure, since it did not accentuate the baby bump, but rather made it only subtly noticeable, the e-zine says, citing fashion gurus.

The rose, though, was an entirely different matter: while some see it as a clear sign of Portman’s fashion-forwardness, others believe it cheapens the whole effect of the dress.

“It was a sweet color. The floaty layers were adorable. Its empire waist was perfect for Portman’s tiny pregnant tummy. And no one could deny she was pretty, especially as she accepted the award for Best Actress,” PopEater writes.

“But some called the big red rose at the dress’ bustline ‘horrible.’ One said it might make her cry. ‘Natalie Portman looked so glowing and gorgeous. Somehow though her dress reminded me of a Valentine’s Day chocolate box,’ tweeted one watcher,” the e-zine further writes.

At the same time, others agreed that the rose was a bit on the tacky side, but that Portman worked it wonderfully into the whole ensemble.

Either way, PopEater writes, Natalie was definitely the most mentioned name with fashion watchers at last night’s Golden Globes, while her dress was the biggest risk she’s taken so far fashion-wise.

Natalie's Portman's dress was clearly the best-made dress at the GG's. Although I don't care for pink, this color was great for her skin tone and I did not consider the red rose "tacky" and thought it complimented the gown beautifully. Catherine Zeta-Jones was 2nd runner-up in my opinion. So many of the other dresses were pitifully cheap looking.

This look did not work for me at all, nothing to do with the rose on the dress but I don't think the hair and jewelry were appropriate. While the dress is lovely (rose and all) I think the hair was wrong, I would have loved to see her with softer waves rather than something so austere. It was not a winning look for me, I thought Anne Hathaway and Michelle Willliams were the winning on the fashion stakes, above anyone else.
