Michael Douglas makes first red carpet appearance since cancer at the 2011 Golden Globes

Just like he was saying later last week, Michael Douglas is back, having beat throat cancer. The actor made his first red carpet appearance since the cancer diagnosis at the 2011 Golden Globes last night, where he was also a presenter.

As PopEater also notes, the actor looked in excellent shape and even brighter spirits. He walked the red carpet hand in hand with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, who wore a gorgeous green gown by Monique Lhuillier.

When he took to the stage to hand out the award to the big winner of the night, “Social Network,” which won for Best Picture, the audience greeted him with a standing ovation.

Douglas even joked that he honestly believed there were better ways to get a standing ovation from such an A-list crowd than by doing what he did, meaning getting cancer and coming out of it healthy.

Speaking with Ryan Seacrest earlier on the red carpet, the actor confirmed once more that his doctors were telling him he was clear of the disease, and insisted he was thrilled to be at the event.

“To be able to come to this thing cancer free is pretty special. This is one of those nights that you really smell the roses and have a deeper appreciation of family and friends,” the actor said.

Douglas was also at the awards because he’d been nominated for one, for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” He didn’t win, but he didn’t appear to be weeping over the loss.

Instead, the award went to Christian Bale for his role in “The Fighter,” which would mean that he’s also officially in the Oscars race – a well deserved and long time coming feat for Bale, word online has it.

Other strong Oscars contenders, as evidences by their Golden Globes wins, are Natalie Portman, Annette Bening, Colin Firth and the film “The Social Network.”
