Despite a weak script and some questionable decisions regarding casting and acting, “Godzilla” has enjoyed immense popularity at the box office, registering the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, and that's saying a lot in the year that some pretty big blockbusters also came out.

Now, Deadline is reporting that a sequel has been put in the works, following the success of the first movie, being developed by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Warner Bros. The first movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, the British director who confessed to growing up on Star Wars movie and Steven Spielberg films.

The director now opens up about doing the sequel and claims that he will “use the same kind of restraint he did for this one,” despite the fact that it's still not clear if he will return to the director's chair for “Godzilla 2.”

The success of the first movie ensures that Godzilla, the Hollywood blockbuster based on the Japanese films from the `50s and `60s, is on its way to become a franchise in Tinseltown, akin to the big domestic names like “X-Men” and “Transformers.”

People now seem to have forgotten completely the 1998 version of the movie by Dean Devlin and directed by Roland Emmerich, which many considered buried the story, despite performing well at the box office.
