When was God of War II released? Because that's just when the first rumors about God of War III began to come out. Of course, the fact that one of the developers alluded to a PlayStation 3 version of the game did not help much. Since then, we've had Chains of Olympus on the PlayStation Portable to keep us occupied, but what every fan has been hoping for was the official announcement regarding God of War III.

The God of War franchise has a lot of loyal followers because of the way it managed to blend great hack and slash gameplay with a nice, twisted and interesting story. The fact that the main character, Kratos, manages to defeat Ares, the titular God of War, in the first game, also contributed to the success of the game, as did the numerous battles with gods that are dotted throughout God of War II. Kratos is a very good character in itself and his adventures are epic, especially considering the setup at the end of the last PlayStation 2 game, involving Greek Gods, Titans and one angry Kratos.

Apart from the recent trailer which was shown at E3, next to nothing is known about the game itself. God of War III will most certainly involve a gigantic battle between Titans, Greek Gods and Kratos at one point, and it will likely provide a fitting end to the franchise. It will also probably feature some sort of co-op gameplay, as game developer Cory Barlog mentioned last year. The fact that the game is coming to the PlayStation 3 also means that we can expect high definition graphics, rumble features, and more expansive level design.

One thing going against this installment of the game being as big as its predecessors is the fact that both David Jaffe and Cory Barlog are no longer working on its development, because they parted ways with Sony to launch their own companies. But, with so little details available at this point in time, it's hard to pass definitive judgment on the game. We'll just have to wait and see.
