The Gmail app released earlier this month for iOS devices is making a comeback, hopefully with better performance than the original installment that got pulled for fixes.

Following the releasing the much anticipated Gmail iOS app at the beginning of this month, the Mountain View search giant saw that it was necessary to pull the software from Apple’s App Store to resolve a problem with push notifications.

After a couple of weeks of hard work, Google engineers finally nailed the source of the problem.

They are now proud to announce that iPhone and iPad customers can re-download Gmail from the App Store for a much improved experience:

“We’ve fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store,” reads the latest entry at the Google Mobile Blog. The search giant links users to their older post on Gmail iOS for information on the app’s key features.

The new post continues with Matthew Izatt, Product Manager, noting that customers have provided a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests in the short time the app was public.

“This included requests for everything from bigger features like multiple account support to customizations like improved notifications and mobile specific signatures,” says Matt.

The Google staffer says they’re not resting on their laurels, and that Gmail for iPhone and iPad will be improved constantly.

“We’re just getting started with the Gmail app for iOS and will be iterating rapidly to bring you more features, including all the ones listed above plus many more,” he writes.

He provides an example of Google’s commitment to implement feature requests, saying “Based on your comments we have already improved our handling of image HTML messages - they are now sized to fit to the screen and you can pinch to zoom in.”

Those who wish to try out the new Gmail app must ensure they are running iOS 4 (or a newer version of the iPhone software), while those who already downloaded the ‘flawed’ app will have to first uninstall or log-out of the old app to install the new one.
