On Thursday, Mountain View-based Internet giant Google announced officially the release of an upgrade for its Gmail application for handsets running under the Android operating system.

The same as the previous flavor of the solution, the new Gmail for Android 2.3.2 was made available for download from the Android Market, and it sports some appealing improvements, it seems.

One of the main enhancements included in the new release would be Priority Inbox, accompanied by Improved Compose, and other improvements as well.

According to a recent post on Google's Mobile Blog, the feature was added into the mix based on user feedback, offering them the possibility to see important messages in a new Priority Inbox view.

“This view includes all important messages in your inbox, regardless of whether you’ve read them or not. You can archive and delete conversations or mark them unimportant from there,” the said blog post continues.

“You’ll notice the importance markers you’re used to seeing in the desktop version of Gmail, and you can also change a conversation’s importance using the menu. To switch between inboxes or labels, try tapping on the current label.”

In addition to that, users are offered the possibility to set up their devices to inform them when an important message arrived without having them pull the handset out of their pockets for that.

“Now you can set up your phone to notify, vibrate, or ring on just your new important mail (check out Menu > Settings > Priority Inbox),” the blog post reads.

Priority Inbox on Android phones does not come with all of the features included in the desktop flavor of Gmail, but it should taste more functionality in the not too distant future.

The new Gmail for Android 2.3.2 also comes with some enhancements affecting the manner in which one would be able to reply to a message.

“Many of you asked for a better way to switch between replying to the sender to replying to all. Now, you can easily switch between reply, reply all, and forward while composing your response,” Google notes.

According to the development team, one would also have the possibility to send emails from any address configured in the desktop version of Gmail, in case he / she moved to Gmail from another webmail provider.

The new enhancements brought to Gmail for Android are available for all users with handsets based on Android 2.2 (Froyo) or newer, in most countries. The solution is available for download from the Android Market.
