Gmail Free Storage Capacity Doesn't Increase Anymore

Only 2800 megabytes available for everyone

Google is the company that offers one of the most popular e-mail solutions on the internet, being one of the first services that provided 1000 megabytes for every mail account. As you may know, Gmail is still in beta stages being available only by invitation. Even if the service is still in testing, the search giant is continuously updating the mail solution, adding features that are meant to attract more users. The latest function included in Gmail is Mail Fetcher, an utility that enables you to retrieve all your POP3-based
mails in the Gmail account. This is quite useful because it can convert the service into a full-featured POP3 client accessible directly from the internet.

Another element that was designed to attract more users was the storage capacity presented on the main page of the service. Until December 31, 2006, the storage capacity was continuously increasing, representing a clear sign that the company will update the service again.

Since its release in April 1, 2004, when Gmail offered "only" 1GB, the service was updated on April 1, 2005, to 2GB capacity and started to be increased day by day with 0.33 MB. Even if in April 1, 2006, nothing happened with Gmail, it seems like the most important moment was on January 1, 2007 when the mail solution stopped increasing its capacity.

"Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able," Google said after the first year.

"If you sign out of Gmail, you'll notice that the storage doesn't increase. It used to increase with about 0.33 MB a day, but the Gmail team forgot to add the code that manages the quota increase after 31st December 2006," Ionut Alex said on his blog.

If the Google team really forgot to add the code for the year 2007, we should expect for an updated version of Gmail soon.
