Google increased the Gmail storage counter speed and its mail technology is now offering more capacity than we ever dreamed of. At the time of writing this article, Gmail provides no less than 4466.953323 megabytes and counting. Since the storage size is getting larger, more and more consumers use the Gmail account in order to store files and save their backup information for later use. But what if you could turn the Gmail account into a virtual HDD? What if you're able to add a new drive letter to your computer and access the account straight from your desktop? What if you're capable of copying files in the Gmail storage space without opening your browser?

The answer to all these questions is 'Gmail Drive'.There's nothing new about this application and I think many of you are already using it but with more storage size provided by the Google mail, the program is almost a 'must have' for the ones looking for a web-based backup utility.

Basically, Gmail Drive works like a shell extension, meaning that it will be installed on your computer, being accessible through Windows Explorer. I forgot to mention that Gmail Drive is only available for Windows clients, so Mac or Linux users must hope that the developers will create some new versions. After the consumer copies a file on the Gmail drive in My Computer, the file appears in the Gmail account as an attachment to a new email message.

"GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to," the official website of the utility describes it.

Please note that Gmail Drive cannot work without an Internet connection or a Google account. Since the Gmail username can be obtained for free, it's only about your web connectivity. And don't forget one thing: the speed of the upload process depends on the quality of the Internet connection so I an broadband connection is recommended.
