Google is always working on expanding the reach of its products and, many times, this means translating them into new languages. Google already supports quite a few for many of its products and sites and now it's adding a new one for Gmail, Persian, or Farsi, spoken mostly in Iran.

Gmail is now available in 54 languages, covering a big percentage of the population of the world.

The addition of Persian to the list of supported languages is perhaps more important than any regular new translation considering the troubles Google has had in Iran recently.

"At Google, we want to make our products universally accessible and useful, and that means providing them for as many people as possible in the language they speak," Ian Hill, Localization Project Manager at Google, wrote.

"The Gmail and Google Localization teams have worked together to bring Gmail to people around the world in 53 languages," he said.

"Today that number grows to 54, because we’re proud to announce that through working with the Persian Initiative Team, we are able to release Persian (Farsi - فارسی), as the newest language available in Gmail," he announced.

Changing the language in Gmail is easy, just go to the Mail Settings, from the sprocket icon in the top right corner of Gmail, and it will be the very first setting in the General tab, the default one.

Select from the drop-down box to pick your own language, or any language in there if you're up for a challenge, the click Save Settings.

Support for the Persian language is not going to help anyone against the increasingly aggressive Iranian government in its attempt to control the web, but every little bit helps.

Google recently was affected by a breach at DigiNotar, the former Dutch CA, which resulted in fake Google SSL certificates being used in the wild, particularly in Iran.
