Google has launched Project Shield, a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) protection tool. In addition, Google Ideas and DDOS protection solutions provider Arbor Networks have teamed up to develop a live data visualization of attacks from all around the world.

The digital DDOS attack map analyzes traffic and provides details regarding the type of attack, its source and destination, bandwidth and other factors. The website, digitalattackmap.com, also lists the most active countries as far as DDOS traffic is concerned.

Users can also explore historic trends to get a better idea of what’s going on. The visualization is based on data collected by Arbor Network’s Active Threat Level Analysis System (ATLAS).

The tool is designed to highlight the challenges posed by DDoS attacks. It’s also meant to encourage dialog between stakeholders on reducing the threat and improving the Web.
