Christiana Figueres says $1 trillion (€0.73 trillion) must be spent on renewables yearly

Talking to the press, UN climate chief Christiana Figueres has argued that, judging by how “well” things are going, efforts must be made to triple global annual investments in renewables.

Unless the world thinks that it can handle an increase in average global temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), that is. Business Green tells us that, for the time being, yearly investments in green energy sources amount to $300 million (€219.4 million).

If global warming is to be limited to said temperature increase, this figure must up to $1 trillion (€0.73 trillion), Christiana Figueres explains.

As she puts it, “From where we are to where we need to be, we need to triple, and we need to do that – over the next 5 to 10 years would be best – but certainly by 2030.”

The UN climate chief also believes that, in order to put a leash on climate change, two-thirds of the world's remaining fossil fuels stock must remain in the ground.
