The new product is a dual-drive external storage dock with pre-installed WD Red HDDs

The other day, Western Digital released WD Red hard disk drives with 6 TB capacity. The company also said they were meant for network-attached storage devices.

Now, the company has spoken up again, to inform us, and the rest of the world, that USB-connected docking stations and drive cages work just fine too.

In truth, there is nothing stopping people from equipping WD Red drives on their normal PCs. Ultimately, they're still just HDDs.

Still, WD designed them with network-attached, and apparently, external storage in mind, the type that businesses should be most interested in (backup being a primary benefit). WD Green, Blue and Black HDDs should continue to be the main targets of PC owners' interest.

The product in the picture gallery below is the latest My Book Duo external drive that is not really an external drive. Instead, it is a good-looking dock with support for the newest WD Red HDD and, thus, with a top capacity of 12 TB.

The USB 3.0 connection will let data move between the drives (RAID 1, 0 or JBOD) at up to 290 MB/s. You even have two extra USB 3.0 ports, to connect a pair of extra drives.

Sadly, the price of the fully-equipped 12 TB My Book Duo was not mentioned.
