Giuliana Rancic has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though she’s only 36, the E! News host had to cope with a breast cancer diagnosis, which came after getting a mammogram as part of her attempt of getting pregnant.

She makes the announcement on The Today show, hoping that her example will inspire other women to get checked before it’s not too late.

“I have early stage breast cancer,” Giuliana says, as the video below will show. Her fans were probably expecting her to announce that she was pregnant, but, sadly, that wasn’t the case.

“I wasn’t prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old, like I was told. I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong,” she adds.

Before going in for another round of IVF, Giuliana was told to have a mammogram, just to make sure everything was ok with her before becoming pregnant.

She was shocked to hear that there was actually something wrong.

“[I was] sobbing… It was like the world just crashed around me,” she recalls of being told that she had cancer.

After the first wave of emotions passed, she came to realize she actually reasons to be grateful: the baby she will have (because she’s determined to continue trying after the treatment) will have saved her life.

“I will be okay, because I found it early. I’m doing surgery this coming week, and then I go to radiation for six and a half weeks,” she says.

Instead of getting other women’s sympathy for the diagnosis, Giuliana would rather they went to the doctor’s and got themselves checked.

“I think a lot of us think we’re invincible. We have to start putting ourselves on the to do list,” she says. Early diagnosis means increased chances of surviving breast cancer, she says.
