Git, a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency, is now at version 1.8.5.3.

Git 1.8.x continues the trend of large releases, integrating a big number of changes and fixes, but the new version has been launched with just a few modifications.

According to the developers, a "gc" process running as a different user can now stop a new "gc" process from starting, and an earlier "clean-up" introduced an unnecessary memory leak to the credential subsystem, but it has been fixed.

Also, "git mv A B/" when B does not exist as a directory now errors out and "git rev-parse <revs> -- <paths>" implements the usual disambiguation rules.
