Git, a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency, is now at version 1.8.4.

The Git announcement for 1.8.4 starts with some very important backward compatibility notes for Git 2.0.

Highlights of Git 1.8.4:

• Cygwin port has been updated for the more recent Cygwin 1.7; • Git-gui has been updated to the 0.18.0 version; • MediaWiki remote helper (in contrib/) has been updated and it's now able to use the credential helper interface from Git.pm; • Remote transport helper can now report errors and maintain ref hierarchy; • The sample "post-receive-email" hook script has received an enhanced replacement "multimail"; • The "git submodule update" is now able to clone the submodule repositories.
