Gisele Bundchen, one of world’s most famous and well-paid supermodels, has a certain habit of getting people riled up with the comments she makes. Just recently, she said she doesn’t use sunscreen when at the beach because it’s “poison.”

Though it’s true that certain products of this type include ingredients that are toxic, when compared to the level of protection they offer against the rays of the sun, they’re a must.

Bunched, once the face for Nivea Sun, made the comments during the launch of her own organic skincare line, which includes, among other things, sunscreen, Us Magazine reports.

“I cannot put this poison on my skin. I do not use anything synthetic,” Bunchen said, thus infuriating skin cancer sufferers and health experts alike.

She also said that, instead of using this “poison,” she chooses to stay protecting by not exposing herself to the sun after 8 in the morning and before late in the afternoon – though there are plenty paparazzi vacation pics of her proving otherwise.

In a statement to Us Magazine, Dolival Loao, head of dermatology at Brazil’s National Cancer Institute, calls Gisele out for making uninformed statements, especially since millions of women around the world look up to her.

“Sunscreen prevents damage to the skin and is of fundamental importance for the prevention of cancer. This is not any poison, when a public person makes a statement like this, it creates confusion,” Loao says.

Seeing the backlash she generated in the media with her comment, Gisele has gone in the meantime in damage control mode, issuing a statement to clarify her previous one which was, of course, a “misunderstanding.”

“I do use sunblock but also I try my best not to be exposed to the sun when it is too strong. My line of skincare products are all natural and do not contain SPF,” the model writes on her blog.

“I feel we all need to pay more attention to what we are putting on our skin. I definitely know the importance of using sunscreen and I try to look for more natural options,” she adds.
