An 18-year-old girl from Chicago, Illinois has been fatally shot on the same day her sister sat behind President Barack Obama while he gave his gun control speech.

On Friday, Janay McFarlane was shot in a suburban part of North Chicago, in a drive-by. According to CBS Chicago, the friend she was walking to was the gunman's intended target.

In the past, she attended Hyde Park Academy, where the President held his speech on gun legislation.

DNA Info writes that she changed schools and opted for an alternative institution after becoming pregnant. Janay has given birth to her son, Jayden, three months ago.

Her younger sister, Destini, is still a student at Hyde Park, sitting in the audience behind Obama during his speech on stricter gun control regulations.

While police haven't made any arrests, two people have been questioned regarding the crime, Chicago Sun-Times reports. The victim’s mother describes that she was heading home from a nearby store, and that she had no known enemies.

“The next thing I knew I got a call and they said my baby was dead. And she was shot in the head. […] I would say I don’t know why you killed my baby. My baby doesn’t bother anybody. She’s a friend to anybody. She’s a loving person," Angela Blakely says.

The case of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, whom we spoke about before, was covered during Friday's discussion. The honor student who participated in the President's inauguration ceremony was fatally shot in a South Side park, last month.

McFarlane's mother explains that her daughter would often speak of Hadiya, mourning her and other victims of gun violence in Chicago.

"She said 'Mom, that's so sad. I feel so bad for that little girl.' Every time she saw kids on TV she said, 'Momma, I feel so bad for these people that gotta leave their kids,'" Angela Blakely details.
