Keepers wanted to put down Marius in preparation for the arrival of a female

It's very good news for Marius the giraffe. As it turns out, its caretakers at the Jyllands Park Zoo in western Denmark have decided not to kill it. At least for the time being, anyhow.

Apparently, the zoo's staff first started thinking about putting Marius to sleep when it was announced that a female giraffe might come and live at this facility.

According to media reports, they wanted to put down the male giraffe so as to make sure it would not get into fights with another male over the zoo's news arrival, and also to make room for the lady giraffe.

However, now that it's been made clear that no female giraffe is to be delivered to the Jyllands Park Zoo anytime soon, keepers say that “We will of course keep both out male giraffes,” Daily Mail reports.

Just last week, a giraffe living at Copenhagen Zoo was not as lucky, despite the fact that it was also named Marius. Thus, it was killed and fed to lions in an attempt to avoid inbreeding.
