Gionee's M5 smartphone with two batteries leaked for the first time a few days ago. The smartphone appeared in China, but apart from this unusual trait nothing else was revealed at that time.

Today, it looks like the smartphone popped up at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, which means the M5 is very real and might be launched on the market very soon.

Unfortunately, the listing at TENAA does not mention what batteries power the Gionee M5. Still, we do know that the smartphone weighs 213g, which indicates that it does indeed pack two batteries inside.

Aside from that, we also have a partial list of specs that will be included in Gionee M5. According to this list, the M5 will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system out of the box, which is a nice surprise considering this is one of the newest versions.

Decent amount of memory, but disappointing CPU

When it comes to hardware, Gionee M5 is quite unimpressive as a matter fact. It comes equipped with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, which is probably provided by MediaTek. But the good news is that it packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, which is quite decent for a mid-range smartphone.

There's also microSD card slot for memory expansion, as well as an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features autofocus, LED flash and video recording. Gionee M5 also features a secondary 5-megapixel camera in the front for video calls and selfies.

The phone's display probably puts it in the phablet category. The 5.5-inch AMOLED screen supports HD (720p) resolution, which seems to be the standard for mid-range handsets.

It's also worth mentioning that Gionee M5 measures 152 x 76 x 8.6 mm, and will most likely be launched in China initially. There's no telling whether or not it will be available in other countries, but let's see it on the market first.
