Today, Chinese mobile phone maker Gionee has officially announced the upcoming availability of its Gionee Elife S5.5 smartphone in India, with a price tag of Rs. 22,999 ($384/€279) attached to it.

The mobile phone comes to the market in this country as the slimmest handset to date, with a body measuring only 5.5mm in thickness.

The device features a glass and metal chassis and is one of the nicest smartphones to have been unveiled in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

We got the chance to play with it for a while at the event and we must say that it indeed looks and feels great. At the same time, it managed to impress us with its fast performance capabilities, which should attract a lot of users to its side.

For those who might have missed Gionee’s official reveal of this smartphone, we should note that it was announced with a 5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD resolution and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Moreover, the mobile phone sports a 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek processor inside, which is paired with 2GB of RAM, thus ensuring that it can indeed offer increased performance capabilities, as mentioned above.

Gionee Elife S5.5 also includes 16GB of internal memory, but it does not come with a microSD memory card slot. The Chinese phone maker had to make some sacrifices in order to ensure the thinness of this device.

The specs list of the handset also shows a 13-megapixel camera on the back, with high-resolution video recording capabilities, paired with a 5MP front camera for making video calls while on the go.

Gionee’s Elife S5.5 is powered by a 2300mAh battery and arrives on shelves with support for 3G networks, as well as with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi Direct, and USB OTG (USB On The Go).

There is also a built-in GPS receiver to take advantage of, along with the usual set of sensors, including Gyro, Light Sensor, Gravity Sensor, Proximity Sensor, and Electronic Compass.

The new device measures 145.1 x 70.2 x 5.5 mm and weighs 130 grams. It was announced with the Amigo 2.0 UI loaded on top, which is based on Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

As AndroidOS reports, Gionee also unveiled that Elife S5.5 is set to become available for purchase in India as soon as the next month (on April 27) and that users will have five different color options to choose from with this device, including Black, White, Pink, Blue, and Purple.
