Those who weren't expecting Motorola to update some of the 'less attractive' Android smartphones to Gingerbread will be thrilled to find that the CLIQ 2 is not part of this category.

Courtesy to the guys over at Eccentric Vision, we know that Motorola plans to deploy Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) major update to CLIQ 2 devices some time in the near future.

ModMyMobile forum user dlamber7 and Eccentric Vision are both responsible for leaking the Gingerbread update straight from Motorola labs, but they are still working on a way to root the ROM.

Although this is an official ROM, it is unclear if this is the latest version of Gingerbread, the one that will be deployed by Motorola.

However, the Gingerbread will not remove the MOTOBLUR user interface, so those who were hoping to get rid of the UI will have to live with it.

Instead, the update will introduce improved 3D effects while switching between screens and the performance of the smartphone has been improved as well.

In addition, users have also reported that problems such as freezes and hiccups have been eliminated with the update.

Motorola CLIQ 2 was released on the market in March with Android 2.2 (Froyo) on board. Initially, the smartphone was not included on the handset maker's list of devices that will receive a software upgrade in the future.

It will be interesting to see if Motorola will start updating more smartphones that have been introduced on the market with older versions of Google's Android platform.

In light of the new events, we should assume that Google might rethink Motorola's updating policy and offer new software upgrade to much older devices.

Unfortunately, there is no information regarding the release date of the update, but by the look of it Motorola is close to completing its work on the ROM, so it shouldn't take more than one month to see it deployed.
