Almost six months have passed since the Samsung DROID Charge made its debut at Verizon Wireless, and the smartphone has yet to receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade. Even though Samsung stated that the device would receive the Gingerbread update at some point, no details on its release date have emerged until recently.

Fortunately, Verizon has just confirmed that Samsung is actively working to deliver the long-awaited upgrade for DROID Charge, as the carrier published the update’s change log on its support site.

The carrier is expected to announce the new software update i510.EP4 for the DROID Charge by end of the week, if tests are successful. The update will bring the software version to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and adds lots of improvements, bug fixes, as well as new features.

Speaking of new features, the update adds Pause, Wait and Password options into the voicemail speed dial entry for manual entry or storage.

There’s also a new Download Manager application that allows users to manage their downloads from Internet browser, email attachments or third-party apps. Additional security features have been added as well, such as Device and SD card encryption.

Improvements for a range of the phone’s features have also been made, including audio output, camera, Bluetooth, data connectivity, email client, GPS, HDMI output, SMS and MMS messaging, Web browser and Video on Demand.

Furthermore, the Software Upgrade Assistant is now available from the phone’s Menu, while the vibration alert intensity has been increased. On the other hand, the low battery notification sound has been reduced.

New email features have been included as well, such as support for messaging signature setting, encrypted password for the hotspot, as well as the option to display .eml attachments from Outlook email.

Obviously, the update will be pushed OTA (over the air), probably in waves. Stay tuned for more updates on the subject.
