Indian owners of the popular Galaxy S Android smartphone will happy to know that Samsung plans to release the highly-anticipated Gingerbread software upgrade by the end of May.

Samsung India has recently confirmed via Twitter that the Galaxy S will be receiving Gingerbread very soon, and added that more information will be disclosed in due time.

Galaxy S Gingerbread update is expected towards the end of this month. Will keep you posted as we get more information.”

It appears that the Indian division of Samsung Mobile has a busy schedule, as the manufacturer also plans to release the Gingerbread upgrade for the original Galaxy Tab by the end of the month.

On related news, Indian customers who preferred the Galaxy SL, instead of the Galaxy S, will have to wait a bit more, as the handset maker announced via Twitter that the Android 2.3 update will be deployed in the first or second week of July.

Gingerbread for Galaxy SL is expected to be released around first or second week of july. Will keep you updated.”

In addition to the evident differences in size and weight, Galaxy S and Galaxy SL are powered by processors manufactured by different companies.

While the Galaxy S is equipped with single core 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Hummingbird processor made by Samsung, the Galaxy SL embeds a TI OMAP 3630 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU manufactured by Texas Instruments.

Furthermore, the Galaxy SL comes with a SC-LCD capacitive touchscreen, while the highly-acclaimed Galaxy S features a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display.

However, the Galaxy SL is powered by a slightly higher-capacity 1650 mAh Li-Ion battery, in comparison with Galaxy S' 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Although no exact release dates have been disclosed for the updates, it is likely that Samsung India will try to deliver the Gingerbread for Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab Android devices about the same time.
