Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, has been already loaded on around 10 percent of all Android-based devices out there, the latest data coming from the Internet giant shows. During the two weeks ended on June 1st, 2011, Gingerbread was loaded on 9.2 percent of all Android devices out there, Google shows.

The distribution charts the company has just published also show that Android 2.3, the first flavor of Gingerbread, was present on 1.1 percent of these devices, while Android 2.3.3, a later release, was loaded on 8.1 percent of them.

A month ago, Google's stats showed Gingerbread loaded on 4 percent of the total number of devices that accessed the Android Market during the two weeks ended on May 2nd, 2011.

Android 2.2 Froyo, the OS flavor that has been growing ever since its launch, is now loaded on 64.6 percent of all Android devices out there, down 1.3 percentage points from the 65.9 percent devices it was loaded on a month ago.

Clearly, the latest Android version for mobile phones, also the most advanced one to date, is starting to gain share on the Android distribution charts, and should continue to grow in the following months as well, courtesy of new devices launched with it, or of OS upgrades deployed on existing phones.

During the 14-day period ending on June 1, 2011, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the platform iteration designed for tablet PCs, was loaded on 0.3 percent of active devices out there, while the newer Android 3.1 flavor accounted for 0.3 percent of them as well.

This brings Honeycomb's share up to 0.6 percent of all active Android devices out there, double than the 0.3 percent of devices it accounted for a month ago.

Older platform versions are losing even more share than before, with Android 2.1 loaded on 21.2 percent of active devices, down from 24.5 in early May. Android 1.6 accounted for only 2.5 percent of them, down from 3.0 a month ago, while Android 1.5 was loaded on 1.9 percent devices, down from 2.3 percent.

Undoubtedly, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.1 Honeycomb would continue their growth, at least until the next flavor of Android is released, Ice Cream Sandwich, meant to bring them together in an unified software.
