14 DAY TRIAL // Gingerbread, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system aimed at handsets, is now present on 18.6 percent of all active Androids out there, more than double when compared to the number of handsets it was loaded on a month ago. During the two weeks period ended July 5th, 2011, Android 2.3 - Android 2.3.2 versions accounted for 1 percent of all devices that accessed the Android Market, while Android 2.3.3 - Android 2.3.4 flavors of the OS were loaded on 17.6 percent of devices.
Last month, Android 2.3 Gingerbread was present on 1.1 percent of devices, while Android 2.3.3 was loaded on only 8.1 percent of them.
The impressive increase that Gingerbread registered in the time frame greatly impacted the distribution of Android 2.2 Froyo on existing devices.
At the moment, this OS flavor is present on 59.4 percent of active Android devices, down from 64.6 percent it accounted for a month ago.
Android 2.1 lost significant ground as well, dropping from 21.2 percent last month to only 17.5 percent now.
The older Android 1.5 and Android 1.6 operating system flavors are slowly becoming obsolete, being present on only 1.4 percent and 2.2 percent of active devices at the moment.
Interestingly, Android 3.0 and Android 3.1, Google's mobile OS flavors aimed at devices with large screens, namely tablet PCs, have gained only a small percentage of the market since last month.
The Android 3.0 OS was present on 0.4 percent of the devices that accessed the Android Market in the two weeks ended July 5th, while Android 3.1 Honeycomb was loaded on 0.5 percent of them. Each was present on 0.3 percent of Android devices last month.
The new platform distribution charts that Google provided is based on data collected in the 14-days period prior to July 5th, and was meant to offer app developers a better understanding of the most active Android OS flavors out there.
