Mobile phone maker Motorola and wireless carrier Verizon have reportedly started to push out a new software update for the DROID X smartphone, bringing it up to the latest Android OS flavor for handsets, Gingerbread.

Although nothing was announced on this in an official manner, users are reporting through forums (via) that their devices have been already updated to the new OS version.

According to reports, Motorola and Verizon are currently pushing out the software with build number 4.5.588, which would be newer than the previously leaked software 4.5.573.

One thing that should be noted here is that this software update is said to be “silent,” which means that users won't be informed on its availability.

Instead, the firmware would download automatically, and all users would be notified to restart their devices so that the update would be performed.

Some of those who already received the software say that the “Update (4.5.588.en.US) has been downloaded and is ready to install” message popped up on their devices, and that the OS was updated to Gingerbread after the restart.

We should also note that an Android 2.3 Gingerbread build leaked into the wild before for the DROID X, and that the new update might not be available for them too.

Only handsets that are running under the latest official build from Verizon (build 2.3.340) are said to receive it.

One way or the other, it comes as a surprise that Verizon did not made a formal announcement on the availability of the new OS flavor.

Considering the fact that Gingerbread brings a nice range of new features into the mix, the carrier was expected to announce the availability of the upgrade for its devices, that's for sure.

Another surprising fact is that this is a silent update, although users would be usually notified before a new OS flavor is available for them, and prompted to backup all data on their devices, so that nothing would be lost during the process.

For the time being, however, nothing specific was unveiled on the matter, though more details on it should emerge soon, in addition to the aforementioned forum posts.
