Android 2.4, the mobile operating system flavor that made it to the headlines a few times before, has finally revealed its true identity, it seems: Gingerbread. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS flavor that Google launched last month is expected to evolve into Android 2.4 Gingerbread, some of the latest reports around the Internet suggest.

Although Android 2.4 was rumored at one point to be released as Honeycomb, it turned out that the later is actually Android 3.0, and the answer to the obvious question related to Android 2.4 was said to be Gingerbread again.

The recently made official Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc mobile phone was spotted by the guys over at Tweakers.net (via Engadget) with the said Android 2.4 operating system flavor on board.

Apparently, this would be an incremental build that should bring to the tablet a series of features that were not included in the first Gingerbread release.

Among these features, we can count new animation when deleting icons off the home screen, as well as visible video calling hooks, which might not be connected to a Google Talk client with video calling capabilities inside.

A new player application should be packed inside the new build too, along with noise reduction in the call options, but nothing much else was spotted.

One thing that is certain here is that the release of Android 2.4 as Gingerbread should not take us by surprise, since Google already made a similar move when increasing the version number from 2.0 to 2.1, and since there are not major changes included in the new OS iteration.

However, since the person who spotted the new platform flavor on Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc played with it only for about 15 minutes, there might be some features that were not spotted at the moment, but which would be revealed when the new release is made available.

In the meantime, have a look at the photos attached to this article to learn a little more on what the new Android 2.4 OS version might be all about, and head to Tweakers.net here for more of them.
