Chinese manufacturer Huawei is about to release the long-awaited Android 2.3 Gingerbread for its U8800 Ideos X5 smartphone.

Huawei Ideos X5 was launched in the market in December 2010 with Android 2.2 Froyo on board, but Huawei confirmed earlier this year that the smartphone would receive the Gingerbread upgrade.

Although a certain Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is now available for download from its support site, it looks like Huawei is not yet ready to deliver the upgrade.

It appears that this is just the beta version of the update, which is aimed at those who want to test it ahead of the official launch. The file size is 192.33MB and was loaded on the site today.

Those who can’t wait for the final version can download the update here, but make sure you know what you’re doing.

Once you download the update, how do you apply the update to your phone?

The update was pulled by Huawei due to various technical problems, so it's not recommended to install it anymore.

I downloaded and installed on 1st Dec, 2011.
It is not stable with few bugs here and there like wifi problems.
It had an installation guide with it which was straight forward.
However it seems huawei pulled it.

The Beta is back up now - hopefully they've ironed out the wifi issues...
