This past weekend, a female giant panda living at the National Zoo in Washington DC, US was artificially inseminated by veterinarians.

The zoo's staff later explained that their decision to artificially inseminate Mei Xiang, as this female is named, came as a result of the fact that neither she, nor her hubby, Tian Tian, was willing to mate.

RedOrbit informs us that Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated after several tests indicated that her urine contained significant amounts of estrogen.

As veterinarians told members of the press, this means that the female giant panda has high chances of giving birth to a baby panda in the not so distant future.

For the time being, Mei Xiang is closely monitored by both veterinarians and the zoo's staff.

Up until now, this female giant panda has given birth to two of Tian Tian's offspring after being artificially inseminated. Therefore, odds are that this past weekend's procedure will also prove successful.
