A grapefruit-sized eyeball, described as being soft and blue, was found in the proximity of Fort Lauderdale, in Florida, on Wednesday.

The Mirror reports that this giant eyeball was washed ashore probably immediately after being torn from the animal's skull, according to witness testimony.

"It was very, very fresh. It was still bleeding when I put it in the plastic bag," the person who found the eyeball stated. Gino Covacci was walking down the beach when he came across the eyeball.

It was turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation.

Wildlife officials' efforts to identify the creature it came from were all in vain. The Commission decided to share its photo on Facebook, hoping users could give tips as to the species of the owner of the eye.

Since it was found on the beach, the most common guess is that it belonged to a marine animal, a giant squid or a whale.
